Shik Shack Backpackers is built with the intention of capturing the true heart and soul of Africa. To us Africa is about slowing down and appreciating the beauty of all she has to offer, from the enchanting stars that fill the night sky to the sounds of cow bells as the local herders pass by.
Each pre-set canvas tent is pitched nestled into the grass and trees and comes with beds made from reclaimed pallet wood.

The Lounge area is one of our most funky “eco buildings" and is made with plastic eco bricks (plastic bottles filled with scrap plastic, diverting TONS of plastic from landfill), clay from the village dam and cow dung!
Our lounge even won us the Mail & Guardians Innovation in Construction award for 2017.
Chill, read, play board games or have a Gin & Tonic as you watch a beautiful African sunset over the cooling bushveld.

Our Fire Pit is also perfect to gather around and enjoy the "Bush-TV", which is what we call a campfire in the Lowveld.
Take a dip in our swimming pool or lounge on the deck and relax, enjoying a cool drink in the sun.
The pool deck is 100% made from reclaimed pallet wood, and all chairs from creatively upcycling tyres, or giving some TLC to previously loved furniture.
We can cater for meals (available upon request when booking) but require 24 hours notice.
You are welcome to self cater. Please keep the door closed as the donkey likes to get into the kitchen and eat the rubbish, leftovers and well, anything in sight! The kitchen is kitted with electricity, kettle, stove and fridge. We also have basic pots, pans, cutlery and crockery.
The self catering kitchen is made with reclaimed windows, and over 15 000 bottletops laid into the floor!
Our communal bathroom facility has running water, with 3 showers and 3 flush toilets. Hot water included!
Our Grey Water Garden reuses the shower's water as a natural booster for the plants as residues and soaps can provide useful sulphates and nitrates to the garden! This also reduces water consumption and wastage because it is effectively reused.
We are also home to five rescue dogs, who will be your welcoming party when you arrive. We also have Daisy, our rescue donkey and Danny her love-child who are part of the Shik Shack family.
Fire-side cuddles are a must during your stay!

This is Africa
This is Africa, and sometimes there is no electricity due to loadshedding or storms. This means our pump does not pump water which will impact the ability to have a running water shower and flush toilets. If this happens, please ask one of the staff for a bucket of water for you to be able to flush with and we can also warm water for you to have a 'bucket bath' and cool off or refresh yourself. This might seem inconvenient for you but take is as part of the 'experience' and realise for some people this may be their daily life.
